What an industrial buyer is actually trying to do
An industrial buyer is satisfying a requirement, and the requirement usually arrives as a number. A bore diameter. A pressure rating. An ingress protection class. A part number stamped on something that failed at three in the morning. Marketing for a manufacturer is the work of being findable, credible and specifiable at the moment that number is matched against the available options.
This gets confused with brand advertising, which has a role but does not get a part specified. In industrial sales the decisive event is often not an enquiry at all — it is being written into a drawing, a bill of materials, or an approved-vendor list. Once a part is designed in it tends to stay for the life of the product, and the competitor who arrives later is arguing against a change order rather than against a datasheet.
So the website's job is to let a design engineer, a maintenance planner or a procurement officer confirm a technical fit without speaking to anyone, then make the next step obvious — a quote, a distributor, a sample, a CAD file.
Competing with your own distributors
Channel conflict is the structural problem in this sector, and most manufacturers handle it by flinching. The manufacturer's site ranks for its own part numbers alongside four distributors, a marketplace and a surplus reseller. Distributors object when the manufacturer captures enquiries they consider theirs. The result is a website that withholds information to keep the peace.
That is the worst available option, because the withheld information is what wins the specification — and when it is missing the distributor loses too. A distributor page for your part is usually a thin catalogue entry; it depends on your technical content existing somewhere authoritative.
- Publish everything technical, sell nothing. Full specifications, drawings and certifications on your site, with a where-to-buy path rather than a cart.
- Route enquiries by territory or account, and tell the customer that is happening.
- Reserve direct sales for defined cases — OEM volumes, custom engineering, national accounts — and say so publicly, so the channel is not guessing.
Whatever the policy is, write it down. Most channel conflict here is not a disagreement about policy; it is the absence of one.
Specifications, datasheets, and the engineer who reads them
The pages with the highest commercial value per visit on a manufacturer's site are the specification pages, and they usually do not exist as pages. They exist as PDFs in an assets directory. Google indexes PDFs, so this is a handicap rather than invisibility, but the handicap compounds: the title in results is often a filename, there is no navigation out to a related part or a quote, revisions create new URLs so superseded documents keep ranking, and you get no useful analytics.
Build an HTML page per part number or tightly-defined family, with the specification as a real table, standards named in text, accessories linked, and the PDF offered alongside rather than instead. It is dull, templated, database-driven work, and it is the highest-return project available to most industrial sites.
Write it for the engineer, who does not want to hear that the part is engineered for reliability:
- Give the numbers, with units and tolerances. A range is fine. An adjective is not.
- Name the standard and revision, not "meets industry standards".
- State the limits and exclusions. What the part is not rated for builds credibility and filters out enquiries that waste a week of sales time.
- Show failure modes and service life where you know them. In reliability buying this is the deciding content.
CAD files, part numbers, and cross-reference tables
Three asset types do more commercial work on an industrial site than anything a marketing department would call content.
CAD models. When an engineer drops your model into an assembly, your part is in the design. Publishing neutral and native formats — STEP and IGES at minimum — is a distribution decision dressed as a technical one. The recurring argument is whether to gate the download. Be honest about the trade: gating produces email addresses and loses some proportion of specifications, and a specification is worth more than a lead.
Part numbers as addressable pages. People search exact part numbers, including obsolete ones. Every part number you have shipped deserves a URL resolving to something useful — the current part, its replacement, or what superseded it. Discontinued-part pages are among the most reliably valuable pages an industrial site can have, and they are almost always deleted.
Cross-reference tables. Someone holding a competitor's failed component and searching its part number is the most qualified visitor you will get that week. A table mapping competitor part numbers to your equivalents, stating honestly where they are not direct replacements, serves that search.
The buyer who appears once a decade
Capital equipment with a fifteen-year service life produces a cycle no quarterly marketing plan can accommodate. At any given moment almost nobody in your market is buying.
The academic version deserves careful citation. Professor John Dawes of the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute proposed the 95-5 heuristic in a 2021 paper distributed by the LinkedIn B2B Institute: because purchase cycles are long, most category buyers are out-of-market in any period, so advertising's job is to build memory links that pay off later. Dawes derived it from interpurchase intervals rather than a survey, and his own caveat is that "the 95% figure is not meant to be a precise rule" but a heuristic. For a manufacturer the caveat matters more than the number, because your real in-market share depends on your replacement cycle.
- Do not judge the programme on this quarter's enquiries. The enquiry you get in 2029 is earned by a page published now.
- Build for the aftermarket, which is continuous when new equipment sales are not: spares, retrofits, upgrade kits, obsolescence guidance.
Trade publications and directories that still do work
Industrial marketing is one of the few sectors where trade media and vertical directories still carry weight, because the audiences are narrow, the editorial is technical, and buyers deliberately go to them. Thomasnet, GlobalSpec and Engineering360 remain real routes to specifying engineers in North America; component distributors such as Digi-Key, Mouser and RS run catalogues that function as search infrastructure for their categories.
- Directory value varies enormously by category. A listing producing steady enquiries for a gasket manufacturer produces nothing for a bespoke automation integrator. Ask for category-level rather than sitewide activity, and treat the vendor's figures as vendor figures.
- Distributor and marketplace listings are search assets you do not control. Keeping their product data current directly affects whether your parts are findable.
- Print trade press still gets read here, and technical article placement usually outperforms display advertising in the same publication.
Trade shows belong in the same category of judgment: expensive, hard to attribute, and in some industries still where specification conversations happen. Judge them on meetings held with named target accounts, not badges scanned.
The received wisdom in this sector that does not hold up
Manufacturing marketing carries inherited beliefs that survive because nobody tests them.
- "Our customers do not search, they phone us." They phone after searching, with a competitor's datasheet open.
- "Our products are too technical or too niche for search." Niche is the favourable condition: low volume, low competition, buyers using precise terminology.
- "Nobody buys a machine like this from a website." True and irrelevant. Nobody buys from the website; everybody shortlists from it.
- "We cannot publish detailed specifications, competitors will see them." Your competitors have bought your product, sectioned it and measured it. The only party affected by the secrecy is the buyer.
- "The catalogue is our marketing." A 400-page PDF catalogue is one URL. As a website it is a filing cabinet with the drawers welded shut.
- "We need a rebrand." Sometimes true. But a new identity on a site where half the range has no page is money aimed at the wrong problem, and agencies rarely say so, because identity work is easier to sell than 3,000 templated part pages.
Where to start, in order
The sequence matters, because most industrial sites fail at step one and spend the budget on step six.
- Count your parts, then count your pages. Take the active SKU list out of the ERP system and compare it against indexable URLs. On most industrial sites that gap is the entire strategy.
- Convert specifications from PDF to HTML, as a templated build from whatever product database exists. Keep the PDFs as downloads.
- Give every part number a permanent URL, including discontinued parts, with supersession paths.
- Publish CAD downloads ungated, and measure downloads by part rather than counting leads.
- Build the cross-reference table for the competitor part numbers your sales desk is asked about most.
- Fix the handoff. Decide the distributor routing rule, publish it, and make the enquiry path work on a phone.
- Then consider directories, trade media and brand work, funded from what the first six steps demonstrate.
The opportunity here is large not because industrial buyers behave differently, but because so few of their suppliers have done the unglamorous part.
